Michael’s Story

Site created on February 11, 2022

Welcome to our CaringBridge website for Rabbi Michael Lerner. Thank you for being a part of a loving community of support for our beloved Rabbi Lerner and his partner Cat Zavis. There are numerous ways to be of help.  Here are some ideas:
** Cook and bring to Rabbi Lerner a vegetarian meal on any one of those afternoons or evenings when Cat will be gone.
** Shop for groceries or other supplies for Rabbi Lerner and bring them to his home.
** Read for Rabbi Lerner from a book that he would choose.
** Walk with Rabbi Lerner as he attempts to walk his dog.
** Sing with Rabbi Lerner his favorite Z’Mirot
** Teach Rabbi Lerner some of your favorite spiritual music.
** Type out ideas that Rabbi Lerner wishes to share with the community.
Please click on "ways to help" and look for some of the requests we've posted. Currently the requests are for late Feb - Early March when Cat will be traveling.

Journal entry by Cat Zavis

Dear friends,

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to bring food, talk/sing with or read to Michael on the phone or Zoom, and for all the amazing and caring notes and donations of support.

A quick reminder that if you donate through Caring Bridge (on the tribute page), the money goes to Caring Bridge (which isn't inherently a bad thing but may not be what you intended). If you intended to donate to Tikkun or to Michael directly, you can write to Caring Bridge and ask for a refund. If you want to donate to Tikkun, you can do so on Tikkun's website and click on donate (www.tikkun.org/donate). If you want to contribute to Michael directly, you can call Alden at the office - 510-644-1200 - and he will tell you where to send a check or other ways of doing so. This is not intended as an "ask" but rather just to clarify.

I returned home from my much needed break and visit with my family. I had a glorious 5 days with my kids and their partners (my oldest son got engaged!) in Jacksonville, FL and then spent 3 more lovely days with my parents and sister in Boca Raton. I visited with some close high school friends as well. I returned home rejuvenated and nourished. To everyone who made my trip possible by showing up, contributing, expressing support and care - Thank You So Much. It truly takes a large community to ensure the well-being of all. We are most grateful to each and everyone of you.

Michael has up and down days. He is getting physically stronger and that is wonderful. Doing physical exercise is not his "thing" but he is slowly plugging away (with loving, gentle reminders!). He was extremely well cared for while I was away both with professional caregivers and friends and family support and visits. He is extremely grateful for that. He was able to lead Torah Study with the wonderful support of Ami Goodman, who led the services. I understand the Torah Study was quite rich. We are trying to discern when to do another service/Torah Study and will keep you posted (for those interested in joining us). If you missed it and want to watch it, please email Alden at acohen.tikkun@gmail.com and he can send you a link to watch/listen.

Sending love, blessings, and appreciations to all,

cat
