RJ’s Story

Site created on January 23, 2023

I never thought that one day I would be setting up a site like this for someone that I love, that we all love. Monday, January 16 will forever be the day everything changed for RJ, Shelley, Addison, and all of their family and friends. What was suspected to be a pinched nerve turned out to be a mass in RJ's cervical spine. Affectionately referred to as "Karen", this mass of a tumor has turned their world upside down. This site is being created to keep everyone informed and all of RJ's support warriors fighting for him. RJ is the most amazing human anyone could ever meet - the big brother that I never had (even though he's just slightly younger, he's much wiser;)) - and all that have been graced by him would agree. Please fight right now with all that you have. Send all the love, prayers, virtual hugs - whatever you can muster - to the entire Pratt family! No one can imagine a world without RJ in it!

(Note: As we progress through this journey, most of the entries I write will be in first person - representing Shelley's voice :) Much easier to write that way! - Lisa)

Newest Update

Journal entry by Lisa DeMoss

One year. 365 Days. 8,760 hours. It’s been a year since RJ rang the bell following the completion of his first round of radiation along with chemotherapy. It’s amazing how fast a year can fly by yet seem frozen in time.

And speaking of time, this time last year we were at the beginning of this journey. We’ve learned a lot, cried a lot, laughed a lot, and have been grateful for every minute we have with RJ. The year has been filled with family, friends, visits, trips, all the things - living life to the fullest extent possible.

Not a lot of specific updates today. RJ continues to heal post last months radiation treatment. He was scheduled to meet with the St. Louis team this week, but that’s now been pushed out to April 25. At that time, he will also get an updated MRI. Unfortunately, as we learned last year, radiation can cause post-treatment inflammation so the longer the wait the more likely to get a clearer picture of what is truly going on. He also started a new drug treatment therapy Avastin. This new drug is administered every other week, with the hope that this will shrink the tumor(s) and inhibit future growth.

Aside from mobility getting harder, RJ is in great spirits and continuing to enjoy time with family and friends that pop in for visits. It’s time for RJ’s Army to rally – like you always do – and keep RJ, Shelley, and Addison in your thoughts and prayers. They wouldn’t have made it this far without!
