Peter’s Story

Site created on March 23, 2021

I reached out to Pete and Jen to ask if it would be OK if I started this page to keep everyone updated on Peter. He went to Mount Nittany ER on Sunday, March 21 and was quickly life flighted to Danville because his MRI showed that he had a brain bleed. This was not caused by any trauma or head injury.  He was diagnosed with a Cavernova and has a long fight ahead of him.  This page is where I will try to take a little stress off of Pete and Jen and keep everyone updated on Peter’s progress.

Journal entry by Pete Swistock

Today, Peter has his first followup ENT appointment since having his trach removed.  Peter was scoped via his nose and everything looked great!  Although his stoma has not completely closed, only a small opening remains.  Peter’s next step is to participate in a sleep study.  During the study, his stoma will be completely sealed off with an airtight dressing.  Peter will then return to CHOP for a sedated scope in the spring.  Based on the sleep study results and what the surgeon finds, he may decide to make minor revisions to Peter’s airway while he is still under sedation.  After Peter has fully healed, the final step will be a surgical closing of the stoma.  Although this may not occur until next fall, we are not discouraged.  The surgeon told Peter that the stoma opening is so small that he can go in the water this summer;  he just needs to wear a water tight bandage.  We’ll take it!!!

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and wonderful 2024. Thanks as always for all of the thoughts and prayers.
