Newest Update

Journal entry by Kelly Kowal

Just wanted to give a quick update.

Pete has made it past the halfway point for his treatments!! He is scheduled for 11 more radiation treatments and will be done on May 7th. He will have one or possibly two more chemotherapy treatments. The side effects of chemo makes him feel nauseous and tired, like he has a bad hangover and lasts about 3-4 days. He is also experiencing some of the radiation side effects, which includes sore throat and is having some inflammation of the esophagus (esophagitis). He has been having trouble eating solid foods, so is on a liquid/soft diet and we have been supplementing half his daily calories with nutritional fluids through his feeding tube. Overall he is tolerating these treatments and side effects pretty well, and is in great spirits.

We have been keeping busy by doing puzzles, watching a lot of Game Show Network and all the Marvel movies in the proper viewing order. We talk/text/facetime with the girls almost daily. (thank goodness for modern technology) The girls are having the time of their lives with their cousins and aunt & uncle. We get a weekly package of the girls homework and art projects. That is one of our favorite things and we truly look forward to it.

Once Pete is done with treatment, they will schedule a PET scan to see how the treatments worked. If everything is looking good, they will schedule him for the esophagectomy surgery after about 8 weeks of recovery.
