Peg’s Story

Site created on December 19, 2022

Our wonderful, sweet Peg/Peggy/Mom/Grandma has been diagnosed with liver cancer. She wasn’t feeling well on December 5th and Jim brought her to the hospital. Tests later that night showed lesions on her liver, lungs and adrenal glands and more tests over the next two weeks confirmed that it is fairly advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. As a family, we met with her oncologist and learned that available treatments would be ineffective or dangerous for her frail body and she has been referred to home hospice.

Peg is not in any pain. Her symptoms have been a decline in strength and loss of appetite. They suspect that her liver was vulnerable from Hepatitis she had years ago and that the cancer has been there for a while.

After the shock, always positive and faithful, Peg said, “I’m glad we have Christmas” and then suggested that the six of us go out for dinner that night. We imagine the days ahead will be full of whatever brings her joy and comfort – visits to the beach, reading, local outings, time with family and friends. For those who have asked, we have provided some ways to help in the 12/20 post below.

During this Advent period of reflection and preparation, we wish Peg, and her family and friends, the Season’s promise of hope, love, joy and peace.

Journal entry by Susan Robinson

Peg's visitation was a heartfelt tribute to the wonderful friend, colleague, aunt, mother, sister, grandmother, wife and neighbor she was and the many lives she touched — her funeral was a beautiful celebration of her life.

The Bierden family is grateful to all who have surrounded us with love and prayers, to those who helped us to celebrate her life, and to all those who will continue to hold Peg in their hearts.
