Payton’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.

Payton  was Life flighted to the Mayo Hospital ER on Monday afternoon after having a blood draw and finding out she had a platelet count of 0. She has had a blood draw on Friday and her platelet count was 23. A normal range is 150-400. After going to the ER in CC, the ER doctor decided after consulting with a team at the Mayo Clinic that she need a platelet transfusion right away. After they found 2 units in Duluth, those were life flighted up with a team of paramedics to administer the transfusion. After that was started she was then taken by ambulance to the airport where she was picked up by another life flight, but this time an airplane that would get her there faster…and thankfully had room for mom! After arriving to the ER at Mayo, she was then admitted to the Mayo Clinic Children’s hospital. She was diagnosed with having  Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP, also known as immune thrombocytopenic purpura) which is a rare blood condition. After having the transfusion, her platelet count went up to 38 but then dropped down to 9 after 4 hours. They then decided to start her an a treatment plan with Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) which is a therapy treatment for patients with antibody deficiencies. It is prepared from a pool of immunoglobulins (antibodies) from the plasma of thousands of healthy donors. She will do a treatment and then they will retest her platelet count. And this is where we are right now, waiting for the treatment to end, roughly 11pm and do more blood work and more waiting.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Courtney Quaife

Just a quick update! Payton’s lab today showed that her numbers are back up and we’re 120. She has been doing labs every other week instead of weekly! She is very happy about that ❤️ She has been diagnosed with Persistent ITP instead of the initial acute ITP as it has been over 3 months and she still needs meds to keep her PC stable. They have moved her dosing around and found going below 50mg causes a huge drop so she will be on 50mg for the next year. Her next big appt at the Mayo is in January.

She has slowly been finding her “new” self and returning to school more regularly and is even taking part in the Christmas Play as “Hermey” the dentist! She loves the stage and it safely fits in her new lifestyle so we are all in!!!

Thank you for all your continued thoughts,  prayers and all the well wishes!! We just go week to week and hope one day she goes into remission!! ❤️
