Dear Friends and Family,

It has been a long time since I last updated you with my progress.  Much have happened over this time, and it has been very positive. 

My speech continues to improve.  I am thankful to see the slow but methodical progress.  I still notice my typing and spelling skills are not what they used to be, but I believe they are improving as well.  Otherwise, I just go on with my daily routine.  People I meet typically don't know I had a stroke.  People are surprised to hear I had a stroke when told.  I find this heart-whelming to hear.

About three weeks, I started part-time employment with my former employer in Green Bay (WisDOT).  I was approached by my former boss to consider working as an LTE (limited term employee).  I gave it careful thought and concluded this would be a good fit for me at this time.  I am mostly working from home and occasionally report to the office.  I am doing plan and permit reviews thus far.   I have some outreaching on the phone with both internal and external customers, which has been positive.  This outreach was the big attraction for me to resume work, as it provides me an opportunity to communicate and work on my speech.  Regaining confidence is a big deal coming back from a stroke, and this type of work has been good for me.

I am also taking a summer graduate school class toward my mathematics graduate teaching degree.  It is a class devoted to K-12 issues.  We read a lot and write critiques of the readings.  We meet online once a week to discuss with the professor and class. The course also involves some research.  My research skills have definitely improved!  The class has also open my eyes to the appreciation of what teachers endure during a typical classroom and school year.  The art and science of teaching has changed so much over the years.  Please do me a favor next time you talk to a teacher and thank them for their service and commitment for enriching students' lives!  Teachers are so important and really make a difference.
