In April of 2018 Paul was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma. A large tumor the size of a grapefruit was growing on his right kidney. The tumor and the kidney were removed as soon as possible. The doctors who performed the surgery in California gave him a great and encouraging prognosis - he would be back to normal in no time. Paul recovered and was doing well in early July. He enjoyed going tubing down the Cannon River with the Tomashek clan, celebrating Jena's 20th birthday and working in his garden. He was doing great.
At the end of July Paul's condition started to worsen. Eating became painful and his energy began to decline. Paul's family and co-workers began to comment on his dramatic weight loss. At the beginning of August, Paul's family urged him to consult a physician. He chose to go to Mayo Clinic in Rochester to figure out what was going on. At Mayo the doctors diagnosed him with a stage four metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma that had spread to the abdomen and lungs. The prognosis for this type of cancer is not good, but Paul intends to start a new Immunotherapy to treat the cancer and possibly give him more time to spend with family and friends.
We hope to use the time that Paul has left to travel, hunt, fish, eat good food and make some great new memories.
