Paul’s Story

Site created on October 20, 2017

Famous Paul. We all love him. What can  I say about about him that you don't already know? He loves his family, friends and his community. He has a long road ahead of him to heal and to find his new normal. I know that with his family, friends, and community that he will have lots of encouragement on his walk (when his leg gets to workin' :).

This is where you will find all the latest on him.

Hello 4 month anniversary of the "big event!" Time flies when you have therapy appointments. We have had major doctor appointments the last few weeks. We are also cane free and walking on our own!

Paul had an EMG on both arms and we found out a lot of information regarding his nerve damage. From the trauma he inherited carpal tunnel on both hands but will only have surgery on his right at this point. Paul is looking forward to having one good hand once the surgery is complete. Right now, his right pinky is the only one that feels normal. His left side has a few more issues. We found out that his fractured shoulder blade is healing nicely and the nerves are crawling back to life. His left hand has some nerve damage on top by his knuckles but feeling could come back with time. The big issue is that he has nerve damage in his deltoid muscle. This is the muscle that allows you to fully lift your arm above your head. This nerve damage is most likely permanent.  We are hoping the nerves heal in time but the Dr. wasn't as optimistic. We may seek out a second opinion. He continually improves his range of motion with his left arm during his Occupational Therapy.  For example, when we came home from the hospital, he was unable to put his coat on himself...now he is doing it like it "aint no thang". We hope to continue with therapy as long as we keep seeing improvement. In a lot of ways he has been a miracle patient, so we are hopeful for a recovery with this issue.

He has his driving test on Wednesday- which includes a simulator and real driving. We are looking forward to checking this off our list of things to accomplish to get back to "normal."

On Friday, Paul and I went to the vascular surgeon. The first words out of Dr. Southard’s mouth was “you sure look a hell of a lot better than the last time I saw you.” Amen. We asked him a few questions about his leg and how it looked on 10-19 . He said a leg artery has three layers and only one of Paul’s three was still intact from his tib/fib break. They did an ultrasound on his leg to make sure his stint was wide open. Everything looked fantastic and we got the OK to see the surgeon's partner who comes to Osceola once a month in 6 months. He has to continue on his blood thinner med the rest of his life, so please....no one make my Pauly bleed. Be nice to him. 😏

Today was the big neurology appointment. It went pretty well- we definitely learned a few more things about brain trauma. The doctor basically said that with the accident- Paul has lost 3.5 weeks of his memory and there is some residual injury that should make recovery with time. There is more to it than that- but as the doctor says...if you....1.look alright 2. talk alright 3. socialize alright- its really all people need to know. Which obviously I am an open book- look at everything I have shared....but I really liked how the doctor worded that. If you truly are interested in more of the neurology report- you can ask us. It's nothing crazy just kind of nerdy interesting. And I’m too lazy to type it all out.

Just a reminder that Paul's party is Saturday night starting at 7pm at the Eagles. George and Jeff are playing their guitars and singing. I've been told there will be some Beatles tunes. You are all welcome and I know Paul is looking forward to some socialization and seeing people from the community. He is a very social person and for the last four months, his life has revolved around therapy appointments and his immediate family. He is looking forward to seeing other people!

Once again- thank you all for all your support the last four months. You all have been great sending prayers our way- you could pray for his nerves to heal on his deltoid so he can continue to play old man basketball on Sunday nights again.  And maybe so he can give high 5s again. 😁
