Paul’s Story

Site created on August 9, 2015

Welcome to our CaringBridge site. We've created it to keep friends and family updated. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement during this time when it matters most.

Paul's journey started with an abnormal protein result shown on a routine blood test.  Further testing continued to show this protein spike, leading his doctor to refer Paul to a hematologist at the Coborn's Cancer Center here in St. Cloud.  Because this protein elevation is an indicator for multiple myeloma, the doctor first put Paul through some x-rays of his bones, which were normal.  This is a good sign.  The next step was a bone marrow biopsy, and that is where the cancer was confirmed.  He is on a weekly regimen of oral meds, 24 tablets of one medication, 10 tabs of a steroid, and then he goes in to the cancer center for an injection.  He will require this chemotherapy for approximately 6 months, and then we will likely go to Mayo for a stem cell transplant.

Journal entry by Debra Berglund

Paul had his Oncology labs done and then met with his Oncologist.  Dr. Jurgens still feels that Paul is doing well. Although one of Paul's cancer labs is showing a trend of rising, he feels we are still okay for now.  If the lab continues to rise and/or other labs begin to rise, then we will have to consider a treatment plan, but he doesn't feel that we are there yet. So, we can breathe a sigh of relief for another 3 months.

On the other hand, Paul seems to be having more problems walking again, even when he has the new brace on.  He had his first Botox injection into the right calf a couple of weeks ago. So far, he hasn't noticed much of a change; however, our insurance has approved 3 more Botox injections, so we will see how those go.  In the meantime, his walking has reverted backward quite a bit, he needs more cues again, and is complaining of more pain in the right leg and foot.  Unfortunately, he has gotten on a bit of a merry-go-round.  What I mean is, when he has increased pain in the right leg, he finds it hard to move around much, so his solution is to lay on the couch and not get up and move.  I have to prompt him to take his Tylenol and a cyclobenzaprine, so he isn't getting consistent relief from the meds.  But, when he doesn't get up and move and walk or do his exercises, his walking gets worse, he points his right leg outward, and pushes off on his toes.  This makes the pain worse, and back to the couch he goes.  So, this is an ongoing issue we are dealing with right now.  I am trying to get him up and to be more active, but it is a work in progress.

So, prayers we can figure out his walking and find pain relief for him.  Thank you, Everyone, for your ongoing support and prayers.  That means the world to us.
