Happy Mother’s Day to all!
I was reflecting today on the profound connection between a mother and a child. I am grateful for the nurturing, guidance, and love that I have received throughout my life from my mom. Growing up, she always supported me and provided boundless affection. She is filled with love and loves deeply and fully. We celebrated the wins and she comforted me through life’s challenges.
I often think back to one of my favorite childhood books that my mom read to me (and I have had the pleasure to have now read to my girls) - “Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch that came out in 1986.
The book follows the journey of a mother who sings the same lullaby to her son … starting from when he is an infant through toddler, teenager, and into adulthood.
“I’ll love you forever,
I’ll like you for always,
As long as I’m living,
my baby you’ll be.”
At the end of the book, the son sings the lullaby to his aging mother, changing the lyrics to reflect their evolving relationship. Instead of “my baby you’ll be,” he sings “”my Mommy you’ll be.” He then returns home and sings the lullaby to his own child.
And that has been one of my great joys of parenthood … watching my mom’s great big love and affection be directed to my two girls. She is a wonderful grandma.
With love,
David
