Peter’s Story

Site created on January 10, 2023

A persistent cough sent Dad to the ER in October 2022. They had him go for a slew of tests, including scans. In addition to pneumonia, the doctors discovered a tumor on his tonsil. A few weeks later, he was diagnosed with stage 1 tonsil cancer spreading to the surrounding lymph nodes. The oncologists told us that it is rare that this cancer is discovered so early. We see this as God's gracious hand of protection!

Dad had surgery at Morristown Medical Center to remove the cancer in mid-December. While the surgery went well, the doctors found that his cancer had spread further outside of the original tumor. He has seen a radiation oncologist and a medical oncologist and they both agree that he should receive chemotherapy and radiation to both sides of his neck. Dad will be having a port put in, and they plan to start a 7-week regimen of treatment shortly after that. While his prognosis is good, these treatments will not be easy. Because Dad has always made his health such a priority, we believe this will help him endure or negate many of the side effects.

So many of you have come to the family asking for updates. We decided that this would be the best way to streamline communication. We can not thank you enough for the prayers and love we have already received. We continue to covet your prayers for both Dad and Mom as they take these next steps! We believe in a God who heals! Thank you for believing with us!

Love,
Rachel

Journal entry by Sue Amerman

We have started phase two of Pete's treatment.  He will be receiving immunotherapy today. He is part of a clinical trial and was approved for the trial drug, but the patient is randomized. He will NOT receive the additional trial drug.
We have prayed that God would open or close the door regarding this drug.

Although we were disappointed that he was not receiving the additional treatment we have to trust that God is working and protecting.

We are grateful that we are getting started today and grateful for your prayers.
