Paul’s Story

Site created on November 26, 2019

You might have heard him preach a sermon or teach a Sunday school class; ridden on a bus he was driving, used a computer he had fixed, or surfed the internet on cables he had run through the ceilings; walked through the hallways he had painted, shot a basket he recorded on the scoreboard, or prayed with him in a staff meeting; you might have bounced on his knee, explored the great outdoors on hiking trips together, or seen him in the crowd cheering for you at a sporting event.  Paul Nelson has been many things to many people, but through it all he has been a faithful servant of God, obedient to His truth and trusting in His enduring love.

On Saturday, November 23, he entered the ER with severe pain and shortness of breath, with what was thought to be complications due to a bronchial infection or maybe even pneumonia.  He was diagnosed with all of that, along with rapidly progressing leukemia that was already beginning to wreak havoc on his internal symptoms. Within 2 days of the initial diagnosis, he moved from the ER to a standard hospital room, then ICU, and then to hospice.  He is now trusting God to carry him through to the other side, as he battles the symptoms and effects of untreated leukemia.

Those of us surrounding him are a bit in shock at the rapid turn of events, and we’re trying to learn what we need to in order to best support him and remind him of our love with every opportunity, for as long as we have the opportunity.  We’ll try to provide updates to the rest of you here, as we know there are so many lives that Paul has touched over the years who would love to be here with us as well. Thank you all for your prayers - His strength and grace have been evident to us each step of the way.  We pray that God will be glorified in this latest series of events, as he has been throughout Paul’s life.

Journal entry by Becky Cox

Because Dad was always prepared for everything, he had written his own obituary with a few fill-in-the-blanks.  You can read it here:

Please join us as we celebrate Dad and bid him, "See you later!"
