“Papa” Joe’s Story

Site created on February 22, 2021

Welcome to our CaringBridge website.  We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.

Dad had a major ischemic stroke Wednesday (2/172K21) about 5am. They found a clot in his brain & he had surgery to remove the clot that caused the stroke.  Please continue sending good thoughts and prayers to lift "Papa" up.

Journal entry by Tracey Curtis

Thanks for all of your messages, calls, visits, well wishes and texts.  We may not be able to get back to each of you individually, but we hear you.  This site has been a lifesaver for us to disseminate info & updates while we also try to manage our daily lives.

What an improvement in the last 48 hours!

Papa had hardly been in his bed (except to sleep) since he was assessed Monday afternoon.

Tuesday JL visited for a bit in the morning and CB came by in the afternoon.  He was excited to have visitors other than us. 😉  He even took CB to the 1:30 “Fun & Fitness” class.  You can imagine the “fun” Papa was having with the pool noodles 🍆 they used. Oh Papa! 🤦🏽‍♀️

He was allowed to wander the halls and the floors in his wheelchair all day without being escorted by staff- in typical Papa fashion- he could be on the welcoming committee for this SNF as everyone now knows him!  👋🏼 He is not able to get up/out of the chair or his bed unassisted yet.

Today, he walked about 100ft with the walker and he was worn out. 🚶🏻‍♂️ He does still have pain when he moves his knee certain ways or if he moves it quickly.

By 8:30 this morning, he had already eaten, dressed had an OT & a PT session and was in his wheelchair roaming the halls.  He already accrued 2,300 “steps” between therapy & wandering in his wheelchair.

Today, the doctor was pleased to see how active he is.  She does believe there may have been a rupture or tear (although no tests have been done or ordered to confirm this), and wants to schedule the family for “caretaker training”- anticipating he may go home next week!

Today he also had speech and was visited by EB & Papa’s own family.

By 7PM, he was so tired that he wasn’t very motivated to do FaceTime with his youngest Granddaughter (the oldest was visiting in person at the time).

He encouraged everyone to leave so he could go to sleep.

Until tomorrow Papa- rest up for another busy day!
