Paisley’s Story

Site created on November 24, 2020

Paisley Dawn was born September 2nd, 2020, to Justin and Krystle Lafontaine. She was 20 inches long and weighed in at 9lbs 3 oz.  Paisley is such a precious, happy little baby! Krystle brought Paisley in for her 2-month appointment on Friday November 6th.  At that time, Krystle and the doctor agreed that Paisley was having a difficult time getting her eyes to focus. The doctor said her head was a bit larger than expected & her eyes were irregular. Out of abundance of caution, it was decided to get an Ultrasound done on her head.  This appointment was scheduled for Monday, November16th.

Krystle and Justin took Paisley in on November 16th and the doctor did an ultrasound on the soft spot on her head, which showed fluid and a mass.  Paisley was then transported to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, where an MRI was to be done. The MRI showed that there was a tumor, sitting on the base of her brain. The tumor was creating a blockage, not allowing the fluid to drain from her brain. This resulted in the increased pressure in her head, also affecting her eyes.  Rady Children’s scheduled surgery for the next day, to cure what they diagnosed as Hydrocephalus and to obtain pieces of the tumor for biopsy.

The surgery started at 3:45 pm and was completed at 4:56 pm. Surgery was a success! They did an endoscopic third ventriculostomy to bypass the blockage the tumor created and added a new path for the fluid to drain while also successfully getting two pieces of the tumor to biopsy. Paisley’s heart rate dropped in recovery, so they rushed her in for a CT and the CT showed that everything was clear. Thursday, November19th, the doctors released Paisley from the hospital and at that time Justin and Krystle were informed that the preliminary result of the biopsy was in and it was a malignant brain tumor.

Monday, November 23rd Justin and Krystle met with the Pediatric Oncologist to go over the results of the biopsy. At this appointment they were informed that Paisley has an Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (ATRT) which is an extremely rare and aggressive tumor. The oncologist advised that treatment (Surgery or Chemotherapy/Radiation) was not an option due to Paisley's age.

As of Tuesday, November 24th, Justin was able to get in contact with St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and was directed to the Brain Tumor Team. The brain tumor team is currently reviewing Paisleys medical records and will discuss further options with Justin and Krystle Wednesday, November 25th.

We will update as soon as we hear from Justin or Krystle. Please keep the entire Lafontaine family in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this journey with their precious baby.
