Paige has been diagnosed with a rare type of metastatic cancer (thymic carcinoma with liver involvement). The disease is very rare, with about 1.5 cases for every million people each year in the US. There are no clear risk factors — nobody knows why some people contract this form of cancer.
The tumor was discovered incidentally in the workup for other symptoms. Because of the rarity, Paige is pursuing care with oncologists with expertise in this disorder. She plans to receive her treatment at home in Charlottesville with the input of experts from tertiary care centers. Lots of treatment lies ahead. She will be starting chemotherapy within a few days. Future treatments may include radiation therapy and molecular targeted therapies.
Paige is keeping her spirits up and finding humor wherever she can. With the right outlook, almost anything can be funny, and she looks for the lighter side when possible. As a physician for over 20 years, she has always been aware that life is fragile. She has never taken a day for granted. Now, more than ever, she is relishing every ray of sunshine, bike ride, and tender moment with her people. Husband Mike and daughters Reagan (sophomore at University of Chicago) and Ellie (freshman at Monticello HS) are managing well and supporting Paige.
So, what can you do for Paige?
Texts and emails are wonderful, or post your messages here on CaringBridge or send her a written note.
Her address is 138 Fontana Court, Charlottesville, VA 22911
We've finalized plans for Paige's gathering: Sunday, April 24. Keeping things light and casual, we’ll gather, reminisce, celebrate, and (maybe a little) console. If you had a connection with Paige, you are invited!
A $25 donation to CaringBridge powers a site like Paige's for two weeks. Will you make a gift to help ensure that this site stays online for them and for you?
