Frank’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

My dad, Frank Jerome Sanchez, was diagnosed with AML Leukemia in 2017. A team of New Mexico doctors from UNMH and a team of doctors in Texas at UT Southwestern in Dallas agreed then that chemotherapy was keeping his Leukemia at bay. He was in remission for more than a year. In that year he became a grandpa -  truly the greatest gift. Now in July of 2019, a week before my daughter's first birthday, his Leukemia returned.

He's been working with the best doctors in two states, and all parties agree a bone marrow transplant is the best shot at killing his cancer once and for all and keeping him alive for the long run. I was found to be a half match, and will be his bone marrow donor for a transplant at UT Southwestern in Dallas, since they do not perform this type of transplant in New Mexico where we both live. I'll do my best to keep this page updated with our journey. Thank you all who have shared messages of support, prayer, donations, and kept us in your hearts. Your support and care is truly appreciated.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Gabrielle Hoag

Hi everyone! Quick update tonight and GREAT news: dad's recent bone marrow biopsy came back clear of any Leukemia!! His appointment with Dr. Ramakrishnan late this afternoon at UT Southwestern may be the last one in Dallas for a while (until May at least). They gave him the all-clear to return home to New Mexico this Friday, Feb. 14th.

I bought him a one-way plane ticket home and thanks to my wonderful aunt and family here in Albuquerque, they've worked really hard to get dad's house super clean and ready for him to move back into his own home. This was a lot of work in itself since dad is very much a bachelor lol and his house hasn't been fully lived in since he left for Dallas back in October.

Lots of changes coming soon, but they're all good and we're so happy dad can finally come home. Doctors are working to make sure the team here at UNMH in Albuquerque has all the medical info they need to take over care. As I mentioned before, dad will still have to travel back to Dallas every now and then for check-ups and tests that they can't perform in New Mexico. He'll still have to be careful and be limited in what he can do/exposure since his immune system is still very young and low.

But we're so thankful to have made it this far. He's working on packing up to check out of the apartment on Friday morning. Caregiver Sam will drop him off at the airport. Sam hasn't taken a day off this entire time (even though his boss offered to fill-in when needed) and we are super grateful to him as well.

Thanks always for all of your prayers and support. xoxo
