Olivia’s Story

Site created on September 17, 2016

Olivia Mae Kannas was born on September 16, 2016 at 4:32 pm, weighing 7 pounds 1 ounce. She has a strong set of lungs and the most wonderful ability to self soothe herself. At midnight she had her well child appointment with the pediatrician, it was found she has a perforated anus. With this diagnosis, there are approximately 1/5000 babies born with this condition. She was transferred to the NICU and given an IV and NG tube as she now cannot eat. She underwent ultrasound imaging and her doctors have decided she requires surgery for a colostomy as her urinary and GI tract are communicating. At a later time she will have reconstructive surgery to get all her plumbing hooked up correctly. We will find more out after surgery about what Olivia needs.

Olivia had an anal dilation today under anesthesia to make pooping easier. Dr Potter was able to dilate Olivia to a size 17 in the operating room. He also put a chemotherapy drug (Mitomycin C)
around her opening to help prevent scarring. The size 17 dilation stretch was held for 3 minutes. She was away from Mom for 31 minutes total. The goal is to keep Olivia dilated to a size 15. We will start dilations again twice daily. Hopefully Olivia will do well. It may take 2 parents now as Olivia is much stronger. An interesting fact is that she can stay at a size 15 until she is three-years-old.

We had a great experience in the PACU today with our nurse Linda. Olivia got a surgical cap with ladybugs. She liked playing with the face mask. The best part was after the procedure, eating goldfish crackers and teddy grahams at the same time.

Two weeks ago, Olivia had a kidney ultrasound and she is doing great. Dr Gargollo said Olivia is the poster child for cloaca.

We do not need to see Dr Potter until September and we do not have to see Dr Gargollo until February 2019. Of course if we develop urinary tract infections or have problems pooping we can go in earlier.

Overall Olivia is doing great. She is starting to run. She is starting to say her words and able to communicate what she needs. She loves playing at daycare and touching everyone’s nose including Barkley’s nose and Mr Cat’s nose.
