Newest Update

Journal entry by Ben Karas

Hey Fam,

A quick update from Benny Bear :-)

Okeyse and I had a mixed vacation in Maui. It started with 7 days of nausea caused by some antibiotics. The 2nd week we got some beach time, swimming, and eating in. We snorkeled with a giant sea turtle at Makena Landing and saw spinner dolphins dancing in the waves with our boat as it returned from a snorkel tour at Molokini. Maui is so peaceful, we love it!

Along the way, Okeyse had mild asthma. It turned into a severe asthma attack Sat when we got home. Long story short, we got in to see her pulmonologist on Tuesday who sent us right to the ER treatment and admission. They expect to keep her until Thursday or Friday to make sure the asthma goes away and doesn't return. The treatments are helping (steroids, albuterol, and a machine called bipap). They said it can take a few days for the lungs to return to normal after an attack like this. She's currently at Alta Bates in Berkeley and her mom is here visiting.

With love,
Ben & Okeyse

ps. A lot happened between June and now (mostly good, some setbacks). We'll have to write that up later. The good news is the nose tube came out a long while back and she's been eating better. But I'll save the details for later.
