Obsidian’s Story

Site created on July 2, 2023

Obsidian was born six weeks early, weighing under four pounds. But against all odds, he only needed to gain weight and learn to take from a bottle. 24 days later, he was home and very quickly went from a tiny preemie boy to the HEALTHY two year old, taller than peers his age and older, and perfect.

Just over a month after his second birthday, he became sick with strep. He seemed to recover okay, but just a week later, he had a fever again, and this time, it wouldn't leave for 12 days. Finally, after every swab and test they could think of, blood work gave us an answer. At two years and two months old, our boy was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Obsidian is in the beginning stages of treatment, undergoing weekly chemotherapy and taking daily medication to keep the Leukemia at bay. He has a long two plus year journey ahead, but he is a fighter, and we look forward to the day we can say we have a healthy boy again!

Journal entry by Taylor Carver

13 days later.. Obsidian has broken out of the hospital! His fevers were deemed "culture negative sepsis" after several tests, CTs, and scopes to try to find a source. Several different antibiotics, fluids, and a blood transfusion later, we are three days without a fever and on the way home!

His blood pressure has been affected by the medication and excess fluid on his body, so we will be monitoring it closely for a while to watch for hypertension, but otherwise, he is mostly back on track to continue his treatment as planned.
