Journal

I had to go out to the doctor yesterday and wait for refills from the pharmacy. While I was waiting I decided to run into the Dollar Tree, well not run, but you know what I mean.

Those of you familiar with chemo treatments already know that your immune system becomes destroyed and so I was wearing my mask that at 100 pounds right now, consumes my entire face.

Standing in the checkout line there was this adorable little girl behind me, she must have been three maybe four years old. She ducked behind her mom holding on while peering at me with wide eyes and I could hear her say, "Mommy what is wrong with her?"

Her mom replied, "Remember when mommy had the flu and had to wear that mask, she is sick and wearing a mask." The little girl continued to hang on tight and hide behind her mother peeking up at me. It was funny in a way because I have never scared anyone before, but then at the same time it was not funny because I felt bad for scaring the little girl.

Feeling the need to explain, I went on to tell the mom that I was not contagious I just had no immune system from the chemo. She said it was easier for her to explain it that way so she would understand. As a mother I told her I understand, I just wanted her to know that she did not have to worry about being in line behind me.

The woman and the cashier both complimented me on my positive attitude and sense of humor and I told them that there is no sense getting upset over it, being upset is not going to change anything or take it away, you are just going to be upset.

It was a strange, but funny experience. As I said, I have never scared anyone before. It is however one of those moments I will never forget and laugh about for a long time.
