Nolan’s Story

Site created on July 1, 2022

Welcome to Nolan Pfister's CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your loving support, continued prayers, and heartfelt words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting and cheering Nolan along this journey.

We are beyond grateful we brought Nolan down to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in May 2022.  It was decided, as a precautionary measure, to set up a series of appointments for Nolan with a specialist in cardiology/genetic disorders. The appointments were completed over a few days.  After further review of the results and thorough consultation with the medical team, Nolan's evaluation demonstrated severe tricuspid regurgitation and severe enlargement of the right ventricle with borderline reduced systolic function. His exercise stress test also showed abnormalities in heart rhythm. Genetic testing was sent on Nolan, and three different genetic variants were also identified. Due to the family history of his older brother, Jackson, and these new findings, Nolan was equipped with a Life Vest, or external defibrillator, until a procedure took place.

Up until this point, Nolan has had no symptoms and has lead an active, healthy lifestyle.  We were all completely shocked to hear these results. Our family trusts we were lead in the right direction, and are confident Nolan is in the best hands possible. We are comforted that his BIG Brother continues to guide and help him along the way.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Brooke Pfister

The SPRING SEASON is here!  Nolan is coming off a successful 10-week rest + recovery plan and all is going well. Since our last update, Nolan is now a year older (17) and back in school full-time. He's also keeping busy with his friends and focusing on his rehabilitation/workouts in the gym.

We returned to Mayo's Genetic Heart Rhythm Clinic on April 1st for Nolan's follow-up appointments. Here's the breakdown:

♥️  Highlights  ♥️

07:30am   Labs
07:45am   Cardiac device check
08:35am   Echocardiogram
10:50am   Chest X-ray
11:20am   ECG

1:15pm  Exercise Test (treadmill)

1:45pm   Consult with Dr. Ackerman

Dr. Ackerman read through all of Nolan's test results and was truly amazed.  He told us Nolan has recovered uneventfully from his tricuspid valve re-repair/pulmonary valve repair and looked great. His ECG was unchanged, and the echocardiogram showed no interval change from his dismissal echo in the hospital.  Nolan crushed the stress test, feeling better than ever on the treadmill and gaining optimal results of no exercise-associated arrhythmias.

Regarding a Return To Play (RTP) in competitive sports, Dr. Ackerman fully supports Nolan's continuation in both baseball and football. He told us the logical decision to focus on right now is baseball. Nolan can continue to accelerate his training at whatever pace his body agrees to each day.

Upon hearing this positive news, we were speechless and overcome with many emotions.  Our hearts were grateful knowing that so many prayers were answered. God continued to show us his grace and mercy.

Let's Play Ball! ⚾ ♥️
