Jana and Keith’s Story

Site created on August 13, 2018

Friends and Family,

Thank you for visiting our CaringBridge page. We are using this site to share updates on Noah's journey in the NICU at Brigham & Women's Hospital.  We know that not everyone who has come to this site actually knows how we ended up here, so below is a quick recap of how Noah's journey began.

After a little over 2 years of IVF treatments,  we had a successful round and found out we were pregnant with a baby boy at the end of February, due November 15th.  Fast forward to July where Jana found herself dealing with the usual pregnancy swelling (feet, hands, face). However,  towards the end of July, we decided to check in with our doctor just to be sure, since she seemed to be getting more puffy every day. On August 2, Jana  was admitted to NWH with pre-eclampsia and severe hypertension. Because she was only 25 weeks pregnant, she was transferred to Brigham & Women's Hospital.  After a few days of monitoring, we were told that Jana would not be leaving the hospital until she had the baby and that they wanted to try to keep her pregnant as long possible - she was moving in to the Brigham! We had family bring some snacks, photos, books, hulu, etc. since we had no clue how long Jana's stay would be (could be a week, could be 9 weeks).  A few days and more tests later, the doctors noticed that there was some fluid starting to build up in Jana's lungs. After monitoring that for 24 hours, they decided that the best thing for baby and Jana was to deliver the baby via C-Section.

Noah Shay Magnus was born on August 9th at 4:17pm and weighted just shy of 1.5 pounds. Noah is currently in the NICU and will be there until at least his due date (November 15th).  He is doing well, meaning there hasn't been any major downs/surgeries/etc. Everything so far is what they have expected for a "micro-preemie". We know he is at one of the best NICUs available and getting the best care possible, and we are forever grateful to be so close to a city that has such amazing hospitals and medical care.

We know that there will be ups and downs along this road and we hope to share some of those on this website, as well as photos of our little boy, Noah.  And we are so grateful for our family and friends during this time. It's been amazing to see and feel the love from you all in just the first week. We can't wait for you all to meet Noah!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Jana Magnus

It's the final countdown! We are so close to bringing Noah home!!!

On Sunday, Noah's feeding tube came out, which is almost the final step to coming home. Prior to Sunday, Noah had been taking a certain % of his feeds via bottle and nursing but also was supplementing via the tube. Now that the tube is out, he's ad-lib feeding, meaning he eats when he wants (bottle or nursing) and we do not supplement. But we don't let him go longer than 4 hours without eating. As long as he continues to grow, that's great! Sunday and Monday, he "snacked" all morning! Nursed a little, took some bottle, slept a hot second, then repeat! Yesterday, he had 4 hour stretches of sleep and then we had to wake him up to eat.  His NICU schedule is out the door!!!

We are very excited to bring him home soon, but also nervous! We've had the comfort of our NICU nurses and dr.'s caring for Noah for almost 4 months. We've gotten into a routine and have made some great friends here. But it will be great to not have to do the daily 45+ minute drive to the hospital and just be able to snuggle with our little man in the comfort of our home :)

Oh yeah and little man is growing. He's over 7lbs!!!!
