Nicole’s Story

Site created on June 26, 2021

Nicole has not been feeling well for sometime. She has been doctoring with her Family Medicine group for increased heart rate, shortness of breathe and a skin rash cover most of her body. No diagnosis was determined. On Monday Nicole reported to work at St. Mary's Emergency room, when a coworker became concerned about Nicole and convinced her to be seen. Labs were drawn and showed her hemoglobin was 4.7 which is critical low. She was then admitted to St. Mary's Hospital for a blood transfusion and more test. Tuesday she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). She was allowed to go home that night to be with her husband  and 3 boys.  Wednesday morning she report to Methodist Hospital to begin her journey to recovery. Nicole will be admitted for 30 days, her first round of Chemo began on Thursday. Cancer chose the wrong lady, Nicole is strong willed and has an amazing support squad. Please keep Nicole and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Journal entry by Josh Axley

Happy Rebirthday to this fighter!  One year ago today Nik received her bone marrow transplant from a courageous donor.  The last year hasn't been easy, but she powered through with tenacity!  Yesterday was her one year testing, which was a full clinic day of pulmonary test, labs, bone density scan, bone marrow biopsy, a visit with Dr. Hogan, and a flu shot.  They dropped another med off her regimen, and is now on just a couple antibiotics.  To the future & new beginnings!
