Journal

On this day last year at about 3 am we learned that Nick had Leukemia.
The moment still seems as unbelievably now as it did then. And shopping for his dorm room today (take two) seemed surreal too.

Through it I have learned a few things about life and myself, and feel compelled to pay it forward as others did for us.

1. There is nothing more important in life than surrounding yourself with good people.

2. My children are forever a physical part of me. I feel their joy and their pain as if it’s my own, but it’s no longer my job to fix it but just to be beside them. They are both amazing people who are becoming even more amazing each day.

3. There is a positive to everything in life, EVERYTHING. Focusing on the positive in your most challenging moments may be the only thing that gets you through that moment to see the next one.

4. You are the only person that can make sure you are ok. Accept this responsibility and do what you need to do.

5. Get the best health insurance you possibly can.

6. Asking for help when you need it is not a weakness. And be specific.

7. “How are you?” is the most difficult question for someone who is facing a huge challenge “It’s so good to see you” is a comfort.

8. Exercise and eating well are incredibly important in sickness and in health.

9. Throw your whole authentic self into today. It’s truly all that is promised.
