Nick’s Story

Site created on February 15, 2022

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On February 11, late in the evening, Nick crashed his motorcycle on a sandy back road. Miraculously, someone called 911 immediately and he was eventually airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. Following an emergency craniotomy, he was intubated and put into a medically induced coma. His condition remains critical. The medical team has been spectacular, he’s in good hands. Unfortunately, this is a slow recovery process. He needs time and patience as well as happy healing ❤️‍🩹 thoughts and prayers 🙏.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Rosie Wilhelm

Wow it’s been awhile since an update! Nick is pretty much back to his previous lifestyle (whaaaaa???) and has been living in his RV for the last week! It’s incredible how he is just… himself. He’s walking well and dressing with no problem, etc. How amazing that he can just become back to “normal”. The biggest challenge is the paralysis of the right cranial nerve. It’s not nerve pain, but a nerve that is not animating the muscles. So his eye won’t close when he blinks, for example, and needs to be taped shut to protect the cornea from drying out (very bad and permanent damage). He’s trying different techniques for every effort to be made. The other follow up appointments went so well that he does not need to return to most of them and he’s off of every medication from the whole ordeal today, I think. He is eating a lot (for him) and is getting his strength and energy back. The ribs still hurt when twisting but he can move everything well otherwise. He is doing so much of his own life again that we’ll not need these updates much longer! Thank you to everyone    🙏 for all the little things and all the big love ❤️‍🩹 I think it’s made a difference.
