Nicholas’s Story

Site created on September 26, 2022

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Nicholas suffered a cardiac arrest Sunday evening.  His friends did compressions on Nicholas until the paramedics came and took over.  We are grateful for their quick action.  Unfortunately, it was a while before Nicholas was discovered and therefore, he went too long without oxygen to his brain.   At this point, the CAT scan of his brain shows massive damage that is challenging to overcome.  These first 24 hours they have kept his body cool and assisted with his functions.  Starting tonight, they will reduce this support.  We will know more tomorrow about how his body responds and what functions he will have and what possible outcomes.  The facts are, this is not an optimistic diagnosis.  The TRUTH is, we believe in miracles and the power of prayer, positive thoughts, and collective support.  So, we ask you to assist us in making a miracle happen tomorrow.

How do we thank so many during such a devastating time?  We would like to think someday we will be able to write each of you a note sharing our gratitude for your love and support but, honestly,  we do not know if that will be possible.  We are so appreciative of the hundreds of cards with words of wisdom and hope, the many letters we have received with stories of your experiences with Nicholas, the gifts that have been delivered, the many acts of kindness, the texts and phone calls checking in, the meals that have fed our physical body, the hundreds of monetary donations and the hundreds that attended Nicholas’ beautiful Celebration of Life and hundreds more than streamed it or watched it later.  How blessed are we during this horrific time!   Please know how grateful we are to be surrounded by so much love and support.

A special thank you to our Unity Minneapolis family, for without your spiritual guidance and prayers, we would not survive this.  And for providing such a beautiful celebration in honor of Nicholas, the message, the meditation, the music - it was all that Nicholas deserved.  Rev Pat, you are a wonder and we are privileged to have you in our lives to call you our spiritual leader and friend.  Many have told us it was the most beautiful celebration they had ever been to, which reflects the incredible message and people of Unity.  Thank you Unity Minneapolis.

And thanks to the City of Lakes Waldorf community that came out to support us, especially Nicholas’ teacher Jason Bernstein, classmates and their parents.  Waldorf education is about creating a village and the village has been imperative as we not only receive support but we support Nicholas’ classmates who lost a friend way too early and are dealing with so much of their own grief.

We are grateful to our families and friends who are walking this loss journey with us.  We have sat with us while we have cried, who have helped us navigate the many decisions and documents that are put in front of us that we can barely read through tear-filled vision, who have gathered with us to remind us to breathe, to support us in any way needed and are committed to being with us for the long journey of learning to live life without our dear Nicholas.  Our sunshine.
