Neil’s Story

Site created on May 15, 2022

On Thursday, May 12, 2022, Neil and Matt headed to the Idaho sand dunes to fulfill a bucket list item of theirs - to ride dirt bikes in the dunes. They went with some friends who had been there before, and were so excited to go! Their trip quickly came to an end as the result of a freak accident. It appeared to those riding that the dune kind of plateaued out; however, it didn't. There was a steep drop-off of about 25 feet. The first 2 to go over were able to avoid injury because the sand absorbed their landing; the next one over crashed and broke 4 vertebrae in his back; Matt was next and broke both wrists; and Neil was last. His injuries were definitely the most severe. One of the friends who had been watching this happen from afar (there was absolutely nothing he could do), said it seemed like Neil saw at the last second what was happening and tried to avoid hitting any of the other riders. He was able to avoid them, but unfortunately, he landed on the pile of bikes.

I will go into detail regarding Neil's injuries in the journal on this site, not here in the story. But right here, I want to express my thankfulness to all of those who were there to care for Neil. The whole group of people is responsible for saving his life. We are indebted to you forever.  M2 Synthetics and Performance said it best: "It is necessary to recognize that, while a few of the guys didn't sustain any serious injuries, all of them have experienced a severely traumatic experience and will also need all of our prayers and support as they heal and process the events that took place! Not only were they patients themselves and parents of patients, but they also had to step up and quickly turn into first responders with only their natural instincts to trust in a dire situation! It is this instinct that help to save Neil's life before the EMS and more help could arrive. Events and actions like this take a huge toll on the people who have made a career in the first responder role, but these guys are not career first responders! They saw things and had to take care of things that they will be processing for weeks and months while they try to heal physically, mentally, and emotionally. Please add them and their families to your prayers, as well!"

And, of course, thanks be to God for preserving Neil's life and guiding the hands of all who were present. I also want to thank all of you who have reached out to us in some way. Your love, support, and prayers are much appreciated. I cannot possibly express how much that means to us. I do read every single message that I receive, but I cannot possibly reply back to all of them and still care for Matt, myself, and advocate for Neil's best care. Thank you for understanding that.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Abby Carlson

Hello, all!

It's been a long while since I posted an update on Neil and his recovery. Things are pretty much status quo around here. Neil still goes to PT and OT 3 days a week to continue to gain strength and stamina, also to regain flexibility and control of his left hand due to his nerve injury. Other than that, things are as back to normal as they're going to get, I think.

He did have a few appointments in mid-August. All of them went well, so well in fact, that he was dismissed by his orthopedist and his speech therapist! The only physician he still will see on a regular basis is the ENT who monitors his airway and voice. He only has to go every 6 months now, though. Fewer trips to Denver is a good thing, for sure!

At the end of September, Neil and the guys who were with him in Idaho went back to conquer the dunes and create some good memories there. Matt and the other kids who were on the first trip did not go this time. This was the culmination of his recovery. It was good for all of them. They have a bond that will never be broken. But it was nice for them to move on past the horrible memories they have there. Neil posted a couple of videos from this trip to his YouTube channel. Please watch and enjoy! (Part 1 is attached to this post; part 2 is below . I can only add 1 video link to each post.)

Since things are calm now, this post will be my last, unless something major happens. We are so incredibly grateful to have shared this journey with you. Thank you for your prayers and support. Words will never be enough to express our gratitude for all the love we've been shown. We've been so humbled and blessed by you. 💜 The Lord be with you all.
