Journal

It's so crazy for us to think that it has been over four years since Nate's accident and yet he still continues to do new things and increase both his physical and cognitive abilities.

I believe a huge part of that is because of the amount and variety of stimulation he gets - from physical therapy to occupational therapy to cognitive therapy. And, plenty of rest!! We don't know how far Nate will make it as he continues to improve but we are going to make certain as best we can that we don't do anything that will inhibit his potential!

I thought I'd share just a couple examples from this past week:

Obstacle Course

Nate's caregiver, Marcy, decided to challenge Nate's driving skills a bit by creating a pathway of cones for him to practice driving through with his new power chair:

He passed with flying colors!

We don't often think about how much has to take place to complete a challenge like this. Most of us could do it without even hardly thinking about it. But when you're recovering from a severe traumatic brain injury like Nate is, completing a feat like this is HUGE!

He needs to see where he is going, watch out for cones, listen to Marcy's direction, and steer the power chair. The cognitive and physical effort it takes to get all those neurons and muscles firing and working together is truly a miracle.

And, it wore Nate out! He was exhausted after completing just a few laps through this gauntlet! But we are so very proud of him!

Walk and Roll

Physical Therapy is a key to helping  Nate reach his full potential.

As Nate's brain continues to heal, it is relearning how to control his body. But if his body is out of shape or the muscles and ligaments are frozen in place, it won't matter if his brain is working, his body is stuck.

Because of that, Nate is doing a variety of PT every day throughout the week. We are especially thankful to have access to two AMAZING NeuroRehab places in San Diego - VIP NeuroRehab and NeuroLab 360. We love the variety of ideas and resources that these places being into the mix to keep Nate moving. This video contains just two examples of the work that Nate does there as he learns to walk and roll again:

Only God knows how far Nate will progress. So we are very thank He is on our team and has provided us with so many amazing people and resources to get him to his best!

Thanks for praying!
