Morgan’s Story

Site created on January 7, 2023

This is the crappy chapter of Morgan’s story. Around December 11th Morgan started feeling sick with pains in his stomach. After a few days he visited the Doctor who thought it may have been a food borne illness so prescribed him a cramping medication and advised him to take Peptobismal, pedialyte and rest. The cramping medicine did help and symptoms began improving. Although not feeling his best, he seemed to be moving in the right direction.
We were able to travel to Chicago for Christmas and other than the Southwest debacle that kept us in the Midwest longer and made us miss our ski trip (not bitter or anything) we resumed home for a casual NYE dinner with close friends at the house. He began feeling bad again Sunday and continued to get progressively worse feeling sick and in pain. He scheduled an in person appointment with his family physician Wednesday morning after suffering through a work day at the office. He was there for quite a long visit where they did some diagnostic things looking for bacteria and sent him to the lab for a stomach scan, and ordered additional diagnostic things. I dropped samples off at lab that day. Morgan returned to the house feeling miserable and was sleeping on and off. Late in the evening he got up suddenly to go the bathroom and passed out crashing in the bathroom a few times. Piper and I rushed in and I told Piper to call 911. Firemen rushed to the house to evaluate him and decided he should go to the ER. When asked what hospital, I instantly said Mayo. Not only is it the best, but happens to be the closest emergency room to us. They did a CT scan to diagnose where the abdominal pain was coming from and identified a mass on the pancreas and liver. Because his blood levels were very low they did a blood transfusion and are continuing, as of Sunday, to search for the source of where internal bleeding is (or was) taking place. They have done an Endoscopy & Colonoscopy which both came out clear. They had him swallow a tiny camera that is searching the small intestines to determine if the source may be there.
When they did the endoscopy they also did a biopsy of the liver. We received the diagnosis of metastatic Pancreatic cancer. It is something that cannot be surgically removed or cured but they will be doing any and all available options to extend his life and give the best quality of life. The unfortunate reality with this type of cancer is we are looking at 1-2 years. We are praying for miracles and hoping medical advances come along during that time. He is getting great care at Mayo hospital and we are very fortunate he is at one of the most cutting edge hospitals with elite providers in their fields. He is young, otherwise healthy and has a will to live. Anyone reading this knows Morgan is an overachiever so if anyone can beat the odds, it is him.
The girls are all handling it in their own way but we are all heartbroken, worried and numb.
