Newest Update

Journal entry by Jay Augsburger

Hi- I haven't posted on here in a while, but Molly and I wanted to echo the incredible news we have had over these past few months.  It's absolutely unfathomable to me how just nine months ago everything was "normal"- no leukemia, no COVID- and equally unfathomable that now everything is getting back to "normal" again.  As Gretchen and Patty have said, Molly's odds have improved considerably since March, and things have shifted into more of a maintenance mode now.  While perhaps 75% long-term survival is still far from ideal- it sure is a heck of a lot better than 25% (or less?) when Molly started treatment.  I'll be going back to work in the next few weeks- I've been fortunate to be allowed to work from home while Molly has been on immunosuppressant medications.  Molly seems in good spirits and to be getting stronger day by day despite generally waking up around 2 or 3 in the morning- another unpredictable aspect of this journey has been waking up (many hours later) to a delicious breakfast and three kids ready to start their virtual school days.  Perhaps my biggest relief about this whole experience has been seeing how unfazed the kids have been by the experience- kids are generally resilient and ours were able to accept the challenges of their mom being away and sick for much of the last few months, but they have been beyond thrilled to have her back with us and I have resumed my status as "second favorite parent" where I belong.

Molly and I remain humbled and honored by all of the comments and well wishes on the site.  We have many many many people to thank in these last few months-
-our new nanny Tess, who Gretchen graciously allowed us to steal, who came in to watch the kids for sometimes 12-hour days when Molly first got sick to allow me to be with her in the hospital, and has stayed on through this whole time and beyond, taking incredible care to minimize her own exposure risk.  The kids truly love her and she has helped us keep our heads above water.
-Gretchen, for helping keep things updated on this site, for letting us steal Tess, for coordinating so much of our schedules for Molly's care and other events, for visiting when she could, and a hundred other things.
-Becky, for what have proven to be some really sweet stem cells.
-Our neighbors Marilee and Joe, who have supplied with an endless list of dinners, often tailored to meet the needs of the various picky eaters in our family.
-Most especially, to Patty and Walt, who have now been here in Seattle with us since early April.  They'll be heading back to Spokane for good next week, and while we're sad to see them go, it's been incredibly helpful to Molly to have them here while she was receiving treatment.
-And so many others of you that have checked in with us during Molly's treatment, come to visit (safely), brought meals, brought Molly to appointments, etc.  The last eight months haven't been easy on anyone- and we truly appreciate that you have taken the time to do these things despite this.

Thank you for everything- and please have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!
