Missy’s Story

Site created on January 23, 2023

Dear Family and Friends,

January 3, 2023 will forever be the day that life challenged our family with the greatest of obstacles.    Words cannot begin to express the shock and emotions that arose while beginning to comprehend the road ahead.  If there ever was a person, who has the courage and strength to physically and emotionally, conquer what lies in front of her, it is Missy.

It is impossible to express our gratitude. We are so moved and overwhelmed by your generosity. To say we are lucky to have family and friends that are so supportive, and loving is an absolute understatement.

We travel back to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville on Wednesday where Missy will undergo surgery on Thursday.  The plan is to remove a section of the colon while inserting a pump which will provide direct chemotherapy to the liver.

We will continue to provide updates here.

I leave today with this. Not sure who wrote it but find it to be true.

What Cancer Can’t Do
Cancer is so limited…
It cannot cripple love, it cannot shelter hope
It cannot corrode faith; it cannot eat away peace
It cannot destroy confidence
It cannot kill friendship
It cannot shutout memories
It cannot silence courage
It cannot invade the soul
It cannot reduce eternal life
It cannot quench the spirt

With a great deal of love and hope

Newest Update

Journal entry by Natalie Eich

It’s been quite a while since I’ve sent an update.  Because March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month I thought it’d be a good time to check in.

Since the last update we learned that the current chemotherapy treatments weren’t giving us the results we needed.  Together with Dr. Agarwal and Dr. P we decided that it was time to stop using the HAI (liver) pump and change the systemic chemotherapy regimen.  Although this was not the news we hoped for, it has presented the opportunity to begin receiving chemotherapy treatments at Northwestern Hospital.  Dr. Agarwal will confine to “steer the ship” while working together with Dr. Kircher at Northwestern.  We miss seeing our team and friends in Nashville, but will continue to have check in appointments on a regular basis.  Everyone we’ve encountered at Northwestern has been wonderful, which has helped make the transition easier.

In addition to changing the chemotherapy regimen we also learned that I will require radiation treatment to my left hip and left shoulder due to cancer in the bones.  I will start my 10 treatments at Northwestern tonight.

My request to each of you during this month is to:

💙 schedule a colonoscopy if you’re 45 or older

💙 schedule a colonoscopy if you’re 40 and have a family history (or 10 years before the age your family member was diagnosed)

💙 discuss any concerns with your physician and request a colonoscopy if you don’t meet the age requirement but have symptoms

💙 encourage your friends and family members to do the same

We appreciate the love and support we  continue to receive from everyone!

With a great deal of love and hope,

Missy
