Mike’s Story

Site created on May 7, 2023

On December 10th, 2021 during a routine procedure, Mike was diagnosed with appendiceal adenocarcinoma - appendix cancer. One major surgery and 6 months of chemotherapy later, friends and family gathered to celebrate his remission. Unfortunately, on April 5, 2023 a surveillance CT showed that his cancer not only had returned, but had progressed to stage 4. Since the diagnosis, we have been working with oncology teams at University of Cincinnati’s Barrett Cancer Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC to ensure the best and most aggressive treatment plan. Mike is ready for the fight & we look forward to sharing his journey with you all.

Thank you for the love, support and prayers!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Shannon Zak

I'm thrilled to share a much-awaited update on Mike's journey!

Last Friday, true to his nature, Mike was cracking jokes as he was wheeled back for what turned out to be a lengthy 5 and a half hour procedure. I'm excited to report that the surgery was a success! The team removed all visible signs of cancer! Unfortunately, surgery was more invasive than anticipated, leaving Mike with an impressive 14 inch incision, and presenting a challenging road to recovery. Despite some initial recovery setbacks, Mike continues to demonstrate  incredible determination and resilience. That determination, coupled with the expertise and dedication of the incredible team at MSK, enabled Mike to reach some key milestones today - opening the door to conversations around discharge in the coming days! Once discharged, Mike will focus on obtaining clearance for travel so we can reunite with Mikey and Blair back home!

While we are overjoyed with the progress, we approach the future with cautious optimism, mindful of Mike's previous experience with remission. It serves as a poignant reminder to cherish every moment and celebrate even the smallest victories.

We're immensely grateful for the outpouring of love and support we've received from all of you. As we have shared, your presence on this journey has been a source of strength and comfort for us both. 🤍
