Journal

I want to once again thank the three beautiful, strong stellar women who sat with me as we kept vigil by Mike’s side from Thursday afternoon into the wee hours of Friday morning when he passed.  I love you Robbie, Tina and Joanne.  We talked, laughed, prayed, kept Mike comfortable and clean, and will never forget this holy experience we shared.

Obituary

Our beloved Mike left to meet Jesus early the morning of Friday, July 15th. He was a beautiful man and a humble soul who was loved by all who knew him. He was friendly and kind to all and didn’t harbor anger or grudges. Helping others was in his DNA. He was generous with not only his money but with his woodworking and repair skills, seeing what needed to be done and then doing it, and always cheerfully willing to lend a hand.

He started his working career in construction, including sheet metal and electrical, and after 26 years of that decided to go back to school and become a registered nurse. He worked at that for ten years, then retired. He was highly respected in all of those careers.

Fishing was his love, his favorite was bass, and he was very good at it. Being out on the water in his boat refreshed his soul, whether the fish bit or not. He was patient and kind as he taught others how to fish, and was easily able to untangle the lines his “students” would cast into a tree. He loved hunting pheasants with friends in South Dakota as well. He had fun creating and adding to the gnome home he crafted from a large tree stump at his house, and it was admired by many.

He and his wife, Janet, enjoyed hosting gatherings and backyard fires, and loved being with family and friends. He loved traveling and was up for anything including trips to Europe and the Caribbean with traveling buddies, Jeff and Maggie, road trips to visit friends and relatives from Washington state to Texas to Florida, and special trips to visit his beloved grandchildren in Georgia. He enjoyed any time spent with family and friends.

He was a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, friend, neighbor and mentor who will be missed by all, and leaves a hole in the hearts of many who will miss his humor and love. His command center in the living room will be empty and silent.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Paula (Klug) Schultz, his second wife, Tomi, and favorite dog, Daisy.

Survived by his wife, Janet, son Monte (Jen), daughter Tina Roman (Kevin), brothers Dennis Schultz (Phyllis), Steve Schultz (Melanie), Paulette Hedstrom (Rocky), stepdaughter Robbie Scherer, grandchildren Hannah, Tim, Meghan and Ellie Schultz, first wife Bev Schultz, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 22, 2022 at 11 AM at Resurrection United Methodist Church of Hastings, 615 15th St W. A visitation will be held from 9:30 AM - 11 AM at Resurrection. Interment will be held at Lakeside Cemetery.
