Mike’s Story

Site created on January 8, 2019

Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer 10 months ago.  It has already spread to his liver, adrenal gland and lymph nodes of the neck.  This is inoperable.  We tested the cancer for newer therapies but the tests showed his cancer would not respond to those.  He elected traditional chemotherapy.  This did slow progression some but left him feeling weak, tired and he could not eat much at all.  He had a couple months break and when the cancer was reevaluated it had grown but had not spread.  He agreed to try a biological infusion here at Witham.  Unfortunately he did not tolerate this well and decided to stop treatments to slow the cancer and elected to have hospice at home.  He had been doing fairly well with days of ups and downs for about 2 months.  In the last week he has not been able to eat well and is confined to bed or chair most of the day.   We are trying to support him the best we can and Great Lakes Hospice has been wonderful.  I will post updates on this site.  Any prayers, well wishes or words of support are welcomed.  Our community has rallied behind dad and myself and it has been appreciated more then we can express.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Alana Hart

At 3:45 pm with Les, Aunt Judy, uncle Nick, Adam, Nathan and I surrounding him, dad slipped peacefully away. I had been laying with him most of the afternoon.  He was not able to communicate but we all told him how much he was loved. Brandon was able to come see him a little earlier as well. At this time I just have no words. Plans are not finalized but when they are I will post them. His services will be at Myers Mortuary in Lebanon.
