Journal

Yesterday (Tuesday) was Day 103, but more notably was the Day 100 appointment work-up and release from care.  Here's the key points of the day...
  1. He had a biopsy which we should get numbers back in the coming weeks.  This is his first biopsy post-transplant.
  2. He received another unit of blood because he continues to show a lot of anemia.  Therefore, his tri-catheter port will not be removed for a while.
  3. He is released with limitations for a few things.  He can be in public places as long as they are not busy and he follows very strict hygiene guidelines.  With that being said, if you see him in public, please do not hug or come into close personal space.  He also should not shake hands or give high-5s.  He is being released at the peak of cold and flu season which, if contracted, could land him in the hospital or worse.
  4. He can go eat in a restaurant!  No fast food, but restaurants are okay.  The doctors would prefer that he takes the food to-go and reheats it at home to ensure bacteria is killed.
  5. He will begin alternating weekly appointments in Joplin and Kansas City.  He will be back at KU on December 11.
Overall the doctors are very pleased with his progress and movement toward goals.  His next steps are to build back strength, improve health habits, and continue weekly blood tests and monitoring.

I cannot thank you enough for all of the prayers, cards, financial support, and visits from family, friends, and church members.  This has been an emotionally and physically difficult time for Dad and my family but you have helped to make it much easier.  We are praying for continued improvements and for a good report from his biopsy.  As you enter the holiday season, please know that we are truly thankful for each of you.
