Newest Update

Journal entry by Nancy Cochrane

Yesterday Mike had an MRI of the brain so that the doctors could view and report on the status of the tumor. It has been four months since the end of the radiation treatment. We were able to observe the images with description by the Radiation Oncology assistant. The final report indicates the tumor is "stable," meaning no significant change in size or location. This is considered good; it is a slow growing tumor and it has been blasted with radiation to slow it even more. In six months Mike will have another MRI.

Since we hit the one-year mark earlier this month, it's probably worth a brief update on impact for Mike. His temperament is improved, and he is more aware of times when he becomes upset or "panics" (his words). His short term memory is still a challenge, and long-term memory is good. He is not as fatigued during the day as in the past. He can walk and work in the yard (which he enjoys). Balance while walking can be a little "off" mostly when he is more tired. In general he needs to take things slow - as an example, shopping for clothes needs happen in a quiet environment, with fewer selections to try on, and more time to make decisions.

As far as the ulnar nerve decompression, he had 4 weeks of Occupational Therapy, and then he was released. He is having some feeling return to the fourth and fifth fingers (good!)  His nerve is healing at the rate of 1 mm per week, and he is at a plateau as far as what OT can do for him. So he has some exercises to continue at home. We're told the full nerve healing will probably take about 12 months.

We thank God for all of you! My updates are less frequent but I'll keep this site open at least until the next MRI.

Enjoy spring and summer! Stay safe and healthy! God Bless you all.
