Mike’s Story

Site created on May 15, 2021

Monday late afternoon, Deb arrived home from work to find Mike unable to speak but able to walk.  They headed to the emergency room in Detroit Lakes.  It was determined they needed to be airlifted to Fargo.  He was admitted to the ICU with a diagnosis of a stroke.  Since then, Mike has shown improvement, he has right side weakness in his arm and is on a pureed diet but is answering yes no question with 'Well' and 'No'.   On Tuesday, he did let out a 'Jesus Christ' but we're not sure if was about the fire at Bodyworks or the long haired guy that walked by.  Wednesday, he moved from ICU to Intermediate Care.  His room is much harder to find.  He is feeding himself, and is not a fan of coffee when it has to be thickened.  While watching the Twins game, he started laughing, the Cenex Dipstick commercial had come on.  Thursday he showered and shaved.  He smiled big when Allison and Katherine (his granddaughters) came in.  Friday morning, Brandon and Mike were watching the news and give him a fist bump when he found out he and Stennie were going fishing.  He's not saying a whole lot but lets us know what he wants in his own way.  Friday night as Deb and Allison were leaving he grabbed her hand and squeezed it.

We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Leah Anderson

Hello

It's been a few weeks since Mike and Deb have moved home and settled in.   Mike continues to improve every day.  His right arm is getting much stronger and connecting to what he wants to do.  Since we don't see him every day anymore but only on weekends, it's amazing to see the improvements each weekend.   Every day he is healing and improving.

Thank you to all who have reached out and stopped in to say 'Hi'.  Every visit is treasured.

Therapy is booked at the lake.  Speech therapy has been going on for the last 2 weeks and hope to add physical and occupational as the schedule opens up.

Mike might not say much, but he's learned how to get his point across.  Last weekend he helped Jason and Jesse put in the weed roller.  Over the years, Mike has perfected how to place the extension cord, he showed the boys exactly what to do.   This weekend, the ranger's tire was low, he came over to get Jesse and they were able to fill it up.

Thank you again for all the messages
