So here finally is the decision before me. There basically is no decision. To discontinue chemo/immunotherapy weekly treatments would culminate in a death sentence likely to occur within the year. This is assuming the aggressive grade 3, non hormone responsive, high risk recurrence cancer were to return. At high risk as I am, no treatment would be performed should a recurrence happen. To discontinue the chemo drug Taxol presently, I will diminish my survival chances, however, it is still possible to pull through. It is the third option that appears to be the most reasonable, under the present circumstances. I will be treated for one year, taking the targeted drug regimen Herceptin scheduled in three week intervals. Between treatments, there should be ample time to recover from the effects of the treatment. The side effects are quite similar to those which I experienced with the Taxol, however, I had been receiving double doses, with both Taxol and Herceptin administered simultaneously. There is no possibility of discontinuing the steroids. My diabetes needs to be closely monitored, and I have been provided with additional drugs to supplement, and hopefully stabilize the fluctuations in my blood sugar levels. The steroids also contribute greatly to weight gains, which has resulted already. This adds to diabetic problems, including neuropathy, which I also suffer from. The schedule with Herceptin alone, and with continual monitoring during treatment can prolong my life expectancy to 4 years at present. The spot on my lung will be closely followed. Yesterday’s escapades included an endometrial biopsy. The test was done to address the CT and pelvic ultrasound findings within the uterus, including the ovaries. Test results anticipated for Friday. I’m hoping for the best. That’s all the news fit to be printed tonight, folks, if anyone’s out there!
