Michelle’s Story

Site created on January 25, 2024

**UPDATE 1/26/24** Well, you simply can’t make this sh*t up. Michelle has officially gone from being a cancer Previvor to a cancer Survivor in just one day. Yes, you’re reading this correctly.

After completing pre-op diagnostics which included an MRI, the radiology report indicated a shadow on one of her breasts prompting a biopsy of that area. She received the pathology results yesterday, 1/25, and they indicated Stage 0 breast cancer (DCIS - Ductus Carcinoma In Situ). The bad news is she officially has cancer, the good news is the surgery she was planning on having on Monday will proceed and is essentially what is recommended as treatment for this stage of cancer. Also in the good news department is that the cancer is localized at this stage, has not spread, and has a very high 5 year survival rate of 99%.  Thankfully Michelle will not need radiation or chemotherapy.

Though this is a shock to Michelle and her family, she remains in excellent spirits and as usual, is trying to find the positive in the situation. Please send those positive thoughts and well wishes Michelle’s way, and continue to visit this site for updates as she heals from her surgery.

Welcome to Michelle’s CaringBridge website. We’re  using it to keep family and friends updated about Michelle’s recovery from her planned preventative mastectomy and reconstruction in one place.  Her surgery takes place on Monday, 1/29/24.

As you know, Michelle had genetic testing indicating she had the BRCA gene and was at possible risk of breast and ovarian cancer in the future.  She bravely made the decision to take control of her health journey and have an elective hysterectomy (completed spring of 2023) and mastectomy with reconstruction.

We appreciate your support.  Please feel free to leave a happy message for Michelle as she recovers from her surgery. Thank you for visiting!

Journal entry by Michelle Heyka

This morning marks another surgery behind us for my family. My sister, Anna, had her bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction yesterday. She took her first walk last evening and was pretty lucid, confirming a future vacation week and talking about her recovery plans. Her doctors are happy with her healing this morning and will be discharging her this afternoon! Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers!

Yesterday I had my first physical therapy appointment. I received a handful of exercises to do to help extend my range of motion. I have a lot of scar tissue that has built up from my hips to my shoulders and these exercises, along with massage, will help to soften the scar tissue and allow for easier movement. I am able to get up and down much easier and can stand with only a little bit of a hunch now. The best news that I received is that I will be able to do the Velosano ride in September!  Hard to believe I will be riding as a survivor but it is certainly more meaningful than ever. In a month I can begin hitting tennis balls too! Only back and forth for about 30 minutes, but it's a start!

As my sister is just beginning her healing journey, its wild to think back to the beginning of mine. So much progress has happened in five weeks. While it will be a while before I am near "normal", I am fascinated by how much my body had endured and how resilient it is. Thank you for all the love and support during this journey!
