Journal

This past Thursday I was able to visit the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo, ND where I requested a second opinion and was seen by a whole team of doctors including a radiation oncologist, surgical oncologist that specializes in breast cancer, a hormone specialist, genetic specialist, and more!

What we found out:

We knew it was invasive ductal carcinoma grade 2: meaning it can spread easily and the grade 2 means the cells have mutated from breast cells. What we found out was that it is still small (1.4cm) and that it appears to be localized so they have staged the cancer as stage 1a!! Which is the best news we could ask for! We still won’t know if there is any spread until we remove the tumor and check my lymph nodes. Still praying it has not spread!!
As for the tumor, we have received a new treatment plan that fits my lifestyle and beliefs more appropriately. Instead of doing the bilateral mastectomy with full reconstruction and plastic surgery, we will be doing a single lumpectomy on February 22nd and then will have to do 4 weeks of radiation to make sure the tumor has been resolved. What this means is that I will have much less invasive surgery but will have to monitor my health much closer to ensure it will not return.

We also did genetic testing at Sanford to see if I carry a “cancer gene”. We should have the results of that back by Feb. 20th. If it is positive, we may have to go back to our original plan with bilateral mastectomy. If it is positive, then my family members should get tested as well- to be safe and aware of our risks. I will keep everyone updated with the genetic results!

If during surgery they find that there has been cancer spread through the lymph nodes, I will then have to undergo chemotherapy, so I am asking for specific prayers that the cancer has not spread, and for clear lymph nodes!

Thank you all again for all the support, encouragement, and prayers for me and my family!! I appreciate it so much and it gives me so much hope and strength for a positive outcome and quick recovery!!
