Michelle’s Story

Site created on July 25, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated about my breast cancer, knowing how it's much easier to talk about people and feelings rather than diagnoses and treatments over the phone/email etc. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you  from the bottom of my heart for visiting.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Michelle Leopold

The end is in sight! 10 more rounds of radiation (every weekday at 8am), and then on Friday 2/7 at 8:30am I will be CANCER FREE and done with (most) breast cancer treatment forever! (What am I doing to celebrate? Going to the Rafael's Oscar Party with the Flick Chicks on Sunday 2/9! And yes, hopefully GOING TO DISNEYLAND soon too!) Ready to figure out what the New Normal will look like here post-cancer.

Crazy morning today - the electricity went out while the treatment bed was elevated during my radiation treatment -- they had to get a stepladder to help me off the bed! (Had to wait an hour for electricity to come back on and machines to boot up.) After that, I had a meeting with my radiation oncologist who said I'm on plan to end radiation in 2 weeks! My daily 8am radiation crew is awesome, plus I've been so grateful for a friendly bunch of smiling faces in the morning who get up early to walk with me at 7am! (you have 10 more chances if you want to join us at the Bon Air Bridge one morning.) Torrential downpour cancelled the walk one day, otherwise we've been walking daily even in the rain! Bowzer and Maverick are very happy dogs.

I also had an appointment with my oncologist today, who is starting me on a nightly pill to help with the peripheral neuropathy in my feet. As you may know, I'll be taking Letrozole, an "aromatase inhibitor" pill daily for (5 years likely) to inhibit future cancer cell growth; she said to start that prescription a few weeks after radiation so I can identify and conquer one set of side effects at a time.

And - acupuncture was recommended during/after radiation, also suggested for neuropathy, so I tried that today for the first time and I'm looking forward to visiting Dr. Camille again next week! I even fell asleep on the table while the needles were doing their thing.

Insider tip - all the Integrated Health and Wellness Treatments at Marin Health/Marin General are available to Marin General community. You can't tip a hospital employee, so it's $80/hour for a great massage. I am really glad I tried Jin Shin Juitsu and Acupuncture. They also offer free meditation and nutrition classes, among other topics, and I'm starting weekly nutrition counseling at the end of the month. I can't say enough about the level of care and quality of service I've received through all of my treatments. And all of us should practice more #SelfCare - Marin Peeps, look into their offerings and see what you should try. Marin Health Integrative Wellness

Thank you for so much love, support, meals, hugs, and prayers. People ask how I'm standing, and although I'm still wondering that myself, I do know that it's because of all of you that I am able to stand. Thank you for standing by me - and sometimes sitting with me. Man this has been way harder than it was supposed to be, and I can't imagine doing it quietly without your support. xoxo from the bottom of my broken heart.
