This morning I went with my mom to her oncologist appointment to go over the pathology report, and there is good news! The surgery (lumpectomy) was successful at removing all the physical/present cancer that was there. No surrounding lymph nodes came back positive for malignancies. However, with any cancer, the goal is to make sure all of it is completely gone with no microscopic cells floating around, so that there is a smaller or no chance of it reoccurring. So the course of action for her is radiation for 4 weeks (daily Monday-Friday) only a few minutes per session and then continuing her daily anti-estrogen pill for 5 years. She will have a consultation with her radiologist in the next couple weeks before she starts her sessions. They need to make sure she is completely healed from her surgery wounds before she starts and actually she has been healing rather well!!
Speaking with her oncologist again today, she is just in awe of how well my mom has come through with everything that she has gone through. She mentioned that she didn’t think she was going to make it that first weekend in the hospital or even be able to walk again. Truly incredible! My mom isn’t completely out of the clear yet, but a lot of fog has lifted and hopefully one day she can say goodbye to cancer and the treatments for good. Again, it’s just remarkable the support so many of you have given my mom and our family. We’ve just been overwhelmed and so grateful for each and everyone of your thoughts & prayers. They certainly have helped! 💜
