Michael’s Story

Site created on January 8, 2023

Michael was having the time of his life living his dream of traveling through beautiful Mexico with a friend. Tragically (and within the blink of an eye) he was in a life threatening motorcycle accident just after the New Year. By the grace of GOD, a stranger miraculously found Michael in the ravine he and his motorcycle landed in after careening off a bridge.

Michael had to endure three long and painful transports (beginning in Manzanillo, then to Colima with the final hospital being in Guadalajara, Mexico) to get him to the proper hospital to perform the complicated surgeries he required. Very late that night the Guadalajara hospital received him for surgery with the various surgical teams in place to proceed.  Ironically the spinal surgeon trained, interned and worked at Barrow's Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona previously?!  What are the chances of that?!  Again Gods' divine hand in the situation.

Meanwhile, Michaels’s faith-filled mother Lisa started working on immediate flights to Mexico.  God opened the doors to make these various flights available along the way to immediately travel from Phoenix to Mexico to be by her son’s side. What an amazing woman and mother. Through GOD’S discernment she was able to quickly and efficiently redirect her flight schedule after arriving in Mexico City as she learned that her son was being redirected to the final hospital that was able to perform the very complex surgery.

The initial time frame for the surgeries was estimated at around three hours.  The skilled surgeons were hard at work for 16 hours installing a copious amount of metal and screws to the various parts of his shattered and broken spine, damaged spinal cord and severed nerves as well as his broken arm.

With God's grace and the prayers of everyone, the doctor was shocked due to the severity of the injuries that Michael miraculously had full brain function after the surgery and very slight movement in both of his feet.  The doctor said it was God's doing not his as he had never seen anything like it before and was shocked himself. There are now additional signs of movement in his lower extremities. There is concern for long term mobility and function.

The recovery time has been explained as 1-2 years at which time the outcome of his body’s healing and the progress from therapy will reveal itself.  The first three months will be the most critical.

So much transpired over the next several days. Many of you were able to follow this on Lisa’s FaceBook page.

Today, however, Michael was approved for an ICU MED-Vacc flight and will be received by the exceptional Barrow’s Neurological Center in his mother’s hometown. Having Michael back in the United States was an answered prayer. They were having trouble securing the bed needed to approve transport and there was extreme upheaval with the Cartel in the past few days. What are the odds and what a story.  Before they started calling hospitals in the area the surgeon wanted to pray with Lisa so that God's hand would be in it to provide a bed.  In the middle of the night the surgeon received a call that prayer had been answered and Barrow's would accept him.

When they arrived from the airport at Barrow's Neurological Institute they did not have him listed as a patient with a room! After finally being assigned a room the next four hours were various doctors and nurses trying to figure out how who they were, how they got a room as no one seemed to have record of them ! God was great at bringing them in the back door:)!🙏🙏

There is a long road ahead for recovery/therapy. Through this site, it is my prayer, that we can assist and provide the support and prayers that are needed for Michael and Lisa. Soon we will link Go Fund Me, meal train, and other links to assist so Lisa can focus on Michael’s recovery.

The number of miracles that have taken place the past week are unexplainable and can only be explained as the work of GOD and prayer.  The prayer is that God can use this for His good, Michael will be healed and others lives will be changed, encouraged and blessed by seeing God's grace and hand in it all.

Please share this page so continued prayers are coming from every crevice of this world. Through these prayers more miracles will be revealed ❤️

Lisa is so very grateful for the support everyone has shown to date and sends her appreciation to all the wonderful people cheering for them.

This will probably be my final post on Caring Bridge for Michael's Story aka "Michael's Miracles".  The past 15 months have been a whirlwind!  From tragedy to miracle after miracle.  There is no doubt to me in terms of how God could have created the entire earth, sun, moon, and the oceans in 7 days.  I have personally witnessed miracles that you would think could only happen in a third world country right before my own eyes!  One after another, after another, continuously for months and months.  It was hard to digest and process everything that was happening.

Michael continued to work very hard physically, mentally, and meditating on his recovery and wellness.  Low and behold he was recovering at a miraculous rate!  Both the original surgeon in Guadalajara and the surgeon at Barrow's Neurological Center continued to be amazed and shocked at his progress!  They would love for him to be a mentor to others in their recovery process now!

The anniversary of the accident 1/2/24 affected me a little more than I had anticipated.  It brought back a lot of traumatic memories of organizing and catching three different flights to get deep into Mexico where Michael was, as well as the ensuing journey that started.

Michael went through over 16 hours of surgery for his spine and arm.  It was a very complex seven level spinal fusion and spinal cord patching, where they did not know if he would come out having full brain function or not, or ever being able to walk again.  To coming out of the surgery with full brain function, later sitting in a wheelchair, to graduating into walking with arm crutches, then started driving again, toward the end of the year was able to move out of my home and is renting in a home here in the valley to continue his recovery.  Then he recently went back to work full time as well.  His boss and employer have been so good and kind to him and I throughout all of this.  If all employers treated their employees with this kind of care, concern and compassion the world would be a better place:)

When Michael went to his year end neurology appointment at the end of 2023,  the surgeon said that his spine was about 60% healed and that they would relook at it again in six months.  Michael continues to obtain and seek out additional treatments to regain the full and complete functionality of his feet, legs and the inguinal regions.

God has been so good to each of us.  I/we cannot THANK each and everyone of you enough for all of your constant, relentless and persistent prayers for his recovery the past year and continued prayers for the remainder of his recovery.  God is good,  - Matthew 7:8, For everyone who asks, receives.  And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.  Matthew 21:22, You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.

I have personally had a handful of people tell me that their lives have been changed because of the "story".  The story is about God turning something tragic into a beautiful story of relentless faith, recovery, reconciliation and rediscovery of what life is really about.  My own life has been changed as well.

It is truly hard to express the amount of thankfulness, appreciation and joy in my heart for each and every one of you that has been on this journey with us and your participation in it.    May God bless each of you richly in your lives.  Keep the faith when things may seem impossible, because with God all things are truly possible.
