Journal entry by Lisa Mecl —
This will probably be my final post on Caring Bridge for Michael's Story aka "Michael's Miracles". The past 15 months have been a whirlwind! From tragedy to miracle after miracle. There is no doubt to me in terms of how God could have created the entire earth, sun, moon, and the oceans in 7 days. I have personally witnessed miracles that you would think could only happen in a third world country right before my own eyes! One after another, after another, continuously for months and months. It was hard to digest and process everything that was happening.
Michael continued to work very hard physically, mentally, and meditating on his recovery and wellness. Low and behold he was recovering at a miraculous rate! Both the original surgeon in Guadalajara and the surgeon at Barrow's Neurological Center continued to be amazed and shocked at his progress! They would love for him to be a mentor to others in their recovery process now!
The anniversary of the accident 1/2/24 affected me a little more than I had anticipated. It brought back a lot of traumatic memories of organizing and catching three different flights to get deep into Mexico where Michael was, as well as the ensuing journey that started.
Michael went through over 16 hours of surgery for his spine and arm. It was a very complex seven level spinal fusion and spinal cord patching, where they did not know if he would come out having full brain function or not, or ever being able to walk again. To coming out of the surgery with full brain function, later sitting in a wheelchair, to graduating into walking with arm crutches, then started driving again, toward the end of the year was able to move out of my home and is renting in a home here in the valley to continue his recovery. Then he recently went back to work full time as well. His boss and employer have been so good and kind to him and I throughout all of this. If all employers treated their employees with this kind of care, concern and compassion the world would be a better place:)
When Michael went to his year end neurology appointment at the end of 2023, the surgeon said that his spine was about 60% healed and that they would relook at it again in six months. Michael continues to obtain and seek out additional treatments to regain the full and complete functionality of his feet, legs and the inguinal regions.
God has been so good to each of us. I/we cannot THANK each and everyone of you enough for all of your constant, relentless and persistent prayers for his recovery the past year and continued prayers for the remainder of his recovery. God is good, - Matthew 7:8, For everyone who asks, receives. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Matthew 21:22, You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.
I have personally had a handful of people tell me that their lives have been changed because of the "story". The story is about God turning something tragic into a beautiful story of relentless faith, recovery, reconciliation and rediscovery of what life is really about. My own life has been changed as well.
It is truly hard to express the amount of thankfulness, appreciation and joy in my heart for each and every one of you that has been on this journey with us and your participation in it. May God bless each of you richly in your lives. Keep the faith when things may seem impossible, because with God all things are truly possible.
