Newest Update

Journal entry by Emily Delahoussaye

A few months ago we set out for more knowledge and options through MD Anderson.  They first did a serious of genetic testing on dad’s cells, sent him on home with a chemo cocktail to be on while we waited for the results.  As many of you know that treatment plan worked very well; until it didn’t.  So that brings us to today.  This week I took dad back to MD Anderson.
We arrived Sunday for early morning labs and then appointments on Monday.  What we thought would be a quick in and out visit returning home with another therapy to try turned into so much more.  The trial doctors were so excited to see him and get him on this new drug asap.

We were given the results of his testing. This is what we learned… the short version.

First…we know his cancer is not passed down..it’s not hereditary.
Second… dad is in the 1%.  Turns out the cell that is meant to kill off cancer cells mutated.  This happens in only 1% of cancer patients.  (PS…we all have these cells…both good and cancer cells in our bodies.  How they develop is different for everyone).  Dad’s good guy cell became a bad guy.
Good News!  MD Anderson has a drug that’s in trial stages that turns that bad guy good again and it kills the cancer cells again.  It is one of the largest break throughs in medicine as we’ve been told.  Dad is a perfect candidate for this drug.
It’s a targeted therapy not a chemo therapy which is great in terms of well… a bunch of things.
He can take it from home!!!
It’s a pill form!!!
It’s proven VERY effective for many cancer patients!!
The side effects are minimal!!

We will head back to MD Anderson for more testing, scans, and evaluations in a little over a week.  Then he’ll start the treatments.

We are encouraged and full of hope again.

We love you all…and thank you for your continued prayers.
