Mel’s Story

Site created on November 9, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. Mel and Pat are using this format to update friends and family regarding Mel's journey with breast cancer, how people may be able to assist, and make this a central hub for communication. It is our hope that you visit here often. We will do our best to keep things as current as possible and respond to your posts in a timely manner.  Thank you for your love and support. We consider this to be our journal, too. It's therapeutic for us to get these thoughts, musings, and emotions on 'paper.' You know us...brutally honest, truth-tellers always, open-books...with a healthy dose of humor (sometimes dark) and probably some swearing (Pat).

Journal entry by Melisa Siegler

Happy Friday!

I ended up having my last chemo treatment yesterday (due to scheduling issues at the clinic) and it went well. Pat and I celebrated last night with gifts from the chemo nurses (yummy chocolate cake and sparkling grape juice) while I wore my 'Not Dead Yet' headband (see photo). 😁

I will have my usual post-chemo symptoms for the next few weeks and then some of the symptoms may start to resolve over the next several months. During that time, if you ask me 'Are you feeling better?' The answer will probably be "In some ways."

I am forever changed. I may feel more like 'myself' in some ways, but it will be more of a 'moving through' versus a 'moving on.'

I can't thank you all enough for your encouragement and support over these last 6 months. Hopefully, the worst physical part is behind me, but I have a feeling the toughest mental challenges may lie ahead. If you'd like a glimpse behind the cancer-curtain, see this article, which is spot on in addressing what this process has been like for me: dear-future-cancer-patient, elephantsandtea

In peace and love,

Mel
