Journal entry by Sarah Malyerck

We had a great tele-health appointment this morning with the rheumatologist to talk about Mel's treatment plan.

The doctor thinks weekly methotrexate injections are our best chance at seeing quick results with minimal side effects. We will do the injections at home for 1-2 years. 😬 While I'm nervous about having to give her a shot every week, this decision is a blessing because it will not require any intravenous infusions for now... that in itself is evidence that our doctor believes we've caught it early and it's still a relatively mild case! 🙌

There are possible side effects with this medicine (nausea, upset stomach, fatigue), but she says we should start to see results in as little as 6-8 weeks.

We are holding off on a decision about using prednisone until after her swallow study (next Wed, 7/22) and until after we see how the methotrexate by itself affects her symptoms.

We will also begin physical therapy in the near future to help regain some of the muscle strength in her legs.

I have already been so overwhelmed by the love and encouragement from so many of you. 😭 😭 😭 I can't express how thankful I am to have this huge community of faith surrounding us right now.

While I know this journey is going to be long and difficult at times, I feel honored and humbled that God has chosen our family to reveal His glory through this experience. I'm excited that all of you will be watching with me as He works. 😊

James 1:2-4
"Consider it PURE JOY, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
