Newest Update

Journal entry by Melissa Crawford

I wanted to write a quick update since I have an upcoming test this week. In an effort to determine if I need Radio Active Iodine, my endocrinologist ordered two Thyrogen injections 24 hours apart starting tomorrow. 72 hours after the 2nd injection, I will have a blood draw to check my thyroglobulin (cancer marker) level. If it comes back under a certain number, no RAI will be needed. Please pray it will come back fine. I am concerned about RAI because there is a small chance it can cause other types of cancer. I would have to follow a specific diet for 2 weeks and then isolate completely from everyone for up to 7 days. There would be several scans and probably a bunch of stuff I’m not even aware of. I am feeling fantastic and l honestly just don’t want that treatment. I will follow my doctors recommendations but I will be upset if he recommends it. I just started a new job last week and I am ready to move on. There is no good cancer but I honestly don’t worry about the cancer coming back. People don’t typically die from thyroid cancer and I know my doctors will keep a close eye on me. I am more concerned about other cancers with higher mortality rates. I have learned through this experience that you have to stay vigilant with your health and be your own advocate. I had  two breast biopsies this year and am so grateful they both came back benign. I was lucky that my PCP ordered a breast MRI at my request and agreed that a heart scan is a good idea due to heart issues running in the family. I also know that I need to make better decisions with my diet and managing sleep and stress better. Daily choices have such a big impact on your health. Dealing with the cancer has definitely changed my life.
My scar is looking pretty good and most days I don’t mind it. It does not remind me that I had cancer but instead reminds me of how loved and cared for I felt while going through it. Thank to everyone who made me feel that way. You know who you are and I love you! Thank you for caring enough to read.  I’ll you updated about the RAI!
