Melissa’s Story

Site created on January 25, 2023

In August of 2022, Melissa was diagnosed with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma cancer (bile duct/liver cancer). She found an amazing team of doctors at Baptist East in Memphis, and they began chemo treatments to attempt to shrink her tumor. After dominating 8 rounds of chemo, an MRI showed that the tumor had not shrunk, but also, the cancer had not spread and was contained to the original location. Her team of doctors then decided that surgery would be the next best treatment option and quickly scheduled a procedure for January 26. Family from (literally) across the world has gathered at home to cheer her on and support her during this next stage of her fight. We invite you to continue to pray with us. Please pray over Melissa, that she continues to find strength and hope that surpasses our understanding. Please pray over her doctors and nurses, that the Lord guides their minds and hands as they carry out their plan to remove this tumor. Please pray for her family and friends as they stay hopeful and strong, a source of peace and laughter for our beloved wife, mom, sister, and Mimi.

And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 1 Peter 5:10

Journal entry by melissa bateman

Hi Mel's Team,

There's no better way to start this entry than by saying I am CANCER AND CHEMO FREE!!!

Over the past month, I have undergone every test and scan available for detection of cancer, and each one has come back negative!!  We cannot begin to express our thankfulness to our Abba Father for all the many (and I do mean many) miracles He provided through my year long cancer journey! If anyone doubts that God still performs miracles, then all they have to do is look at me!

The fact that I am cancer free today is due not only to my excellent cancer care team,  but also to all of you who prayed so faithfully for my family and me over this past year. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all of the love and support each one of you has poured into us throughout this journey!

We are excited to start a new season of life God has planned for us!

Much love, Rick and Melissa

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.  1 Peter 5:10-11
