Melissa’s Story

Site created on May 26, 2021

Welcome to my CaringBridge page! Jer & I are using it to keep family & friends updated in one place, albeit intermittently. In the end of April 2021, I was diagnosed with breast cancer stage 1B. In May '21 I had a lumpectomy, followed by 5 months of chemo completed in October '21, and 4 weeks of radiation completed December '21. When I’m not preoccupied with cancer, I enjoy the swimming, playing curling, watching drag performers, and I love my job as a Public Health and PrEP Pharmacist. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting! -Melissa

Journal entry by Jeremy Malerich

Jeremy here again after a long break.

Melissa finished radiation treatments on Thursday this week. Radiation was somewhat less taxing than chemo, but the schedule was more intense: every weekday for four weeks. She has what looks like a very nasty sunburn in the exposed area. The doctors have suggested to expect fatigue to continue for a few more weeks as she recovers.

On the plus side, Saturday was a normal day. We celebrated her birthday with late lunch at Luna Mexican Kitchen, one of our favorite spots, and then took desert to the drive-in to watch the movie Encanto. Sunday featured lots of relaxing with Esteban.

Hope everyone is well, and staying safe amid the spread of omicron.
